So you’ve been to the UCAMS booth at market day, talked to some friendly committee members, decided that selling your soul for the cheap cheap fee of $10 was a grand idea, signed up to the mailing list and are thinking ‘Now what?!

Well, my best advice to you is to make use of that membership and sign up for the next industry trip!

UCAMS hosts a bunch of events that are put on because they are super beneficial for society members. Two of the best events of the year are the UCAMS Industry trips. These trips take you all around the cities of Melbourne and Sydney to visit a bunch of awesome people doing awesome things at awesome places.

If you’re keen to find out just how beneficial these trips are, then keep on reading and I’ll explain to you exactly why you should go with UCAMS to Melbourne or Sydney!

Life Before a UCAMS Industry Trip:

Amount of agencies I had visited before going on industry trips: 0.

Life After a UCAMS Industry Trip:

Amount of agencies I have visited after going on industry trips: close to 20.

What Does This All Mean?

Last year, we visited Frankie Magazine and Smith Journal, McCann, GPY&R, Mindshare, WHYBIN/TBWA, Leo Burnett, Clemenger BBDO, and Spotify – JUST TO NAME A FEW! UCAMS tries their absolute hardest to make sure that we get to visit a huge variety of different agencies. We’ve been to media agencies, magazines, funky music places, branding agencies AND advertising agencies. So whatever you hope to get into once you leave uni, there’ll surely be an agency to that’ll interest you. And if you don’t know what you want to do with your degree, then this’ll be an awesome opportunity to figure it all out!

Life Before a UCAMS Industry Trip:

I knew very few people within my degree, other than ones I had been forced to do group assignments with…

Life After a UCAMS Industry Trip:

To be honest I’m not very good at maths, but I’m going to say – and you guys can quote me on this – that I know at least 560% more people in my degree post-trip.

What Does This All Mean?

Basically, knowing people in your degree is extremely useful. You know that massive assignment you just got for Ad Strat? Well at least half the people you’re going to go on industry trip with have already done it, and they’ll most certainly be able to help you out. Additionally, you’ll be able to find out who’s doing the same classes as you next semester so that you can co-ordinate tutorials and take away the sick pleasure that tutors get from placing you in the worst possible groups for group assignments.

Life Before a UCAMS Industry Trip:

I didn’t know much about how agencies work and what goes on within them.

Life After a UCAMS Industry Trip:

I now know what a suit is, what a creative does, what AWARD school is, and how many agencies have ping pong tables in them (hint: basically all of them).

What Does This All Mean?

Foundations of Professional Planning (or any other new-fangled classes that they’re making you take these days) is a great start in learning what the industry may hold, but those classes really don’t set you up for the experiences you get and knowledge you learn from visiting an actual agency. I came back to Canberra after a week in Melbourne feeling like I had learnt more in that week than I had in a whole YEAR AND A HALF of my Bachelor of Comms in Advertising degree!

Life Before a UCAMS Industry Trip:

I hadn’t been to a bunch of cool places that weren’t agencies with people from Uni.

Life After a UCAMS Industry Trip:

I hope you guys have got the gist of this by now but…  Now I have…

What Does This All Mean?

If you’re a super social person, then industry trips are great, because you’ll get to do loads of fun things with your fellow UCAMS members. Throughout the industry trips I’ve been on scavenger hunts; karaoke nights; bar nights; been in the live studio audience of The Project; and attended a Melbourne comedy show, as well of loads of other fun-filled activities.

If, however, you prefer to explore the city by yourself, then that’s absolutely a-okay, as all of these extra activities are completely optional (although chances are you’ll want to do them, cos they’re pretty awesome).

I can understand that now that you’re coming to the end of this blog post, you’re probably thinking ‘So you’re saying that I should definitely go on a UCAMS Industry trip because it’ll enhance my University of Canberra experience, and I’ll meet a bunch of awesome people, and I will learn lots of new things that can’t be taught in school, while having a lot of fun…?’

And my answer is: YASSSSSSSSS.

You should also know that what makes these industry trips even better is that thanks to UCAMS’ awesome committee, pretty much everything is organised for you – all you have to do is show up!

So send through a message and let UCAMS know you’re keen, and get ready to find out what life is like before and after a UCAMS Industry trip!

Don’t forget to fill in an expression of interest!

See you on the next industry trip!
